The Stone Bank Lions Club will be coming to Merton Intermediate on Friday, December 5, 2025.
We are looking for some volunteers to help with the Vision Screening.
Vision plays an important role in children's physical, cognitive, and social development. Uncorrected vision problems can impact a child's development, interfere with learning, and even lead to permanent vision loss; early detection and treatment are critical. It is recommended for students to have a vision screening done annually as vision changes occur quickly in growing children.
Visual functioning is a strong predictor of academic performance in school-age children, and vision disorders of childhood may continue to affect health and well-being throughout the adult years if not addressed.
The Lions Club is a service organization that will be providing a FREE vision screening to students at Merton School. There is no cost to the School District or to families for this service.
Note: this is a SCREENING to identify potential vision problems. If your student is screened, the screening may identify potential problems with their vision. A follow-up examination with an eye doctor is recommended.
Students from 5th Grade will come with their class to be screened. A permission slip form will be sent home for you to OPT OUT of the screening. If Nurse Gayl does not receive your OPT OUT, your child will be screened.
Students in grades 6, 7, or 8: You may reach out to Nurse Gayl via this form to request your student be screened and/or your student's teacher may recommend a screening if they notice your student's vision possibly impacting their life at school.
Additionally, if you have younger children at home, or you (a parent) would like to be screened, you are welcome to come in during the Screening as well. Reach out to the Intermediate Front Office to let them know you'd like to stop by.
The screening process is VERY quick, is non-invasive, and completely painless. Your student will enter the room and stand approximately 3' in front of a Lions Club member who will be holding a screening machine. The student looks as the machine while the machine "scans" the eyes and assesses if there may be a problem with their vision.
Students who wear glasses will wear their glasses during the test.
In total, the test takes no more than 15-20 seconds per student.
You can watch a video here to see another Lions Club in action with a Vision Screening (skip ahead to 2:10 to see how the machine works and how fast it is!)
The Lions Club will make a notation if the student "passes" or is "recommended for referral". The Lions will share this information with Nurse Gayl and she will reach out with your student's results if they are recommended to get a referral.
Please send an email to president@mertonpto.org and we'll be in touch.
